SUMMARY
Kompoloi is one of the excavations caused by Technical Works at the entry of Macedonia from Tempi, a key-place Macedonian region, with wooded mountains and fertile plains, abundant resources of food and water, raw material for first needs and high protection by MountOlympus. This excavation, like the neighbouring "Three Platania" and "Pighi Athinas", revealed new "roads of wine" of the late classic and hellenistic years (near Rapsani, rich in vines, and not far from Ampelakia), providing clues that the European tradition of the wine loving landowners with big wine installations is already in acquaintance with the ancient Macedonians, wherefrom it may derive via their successor in Europe, Rome.
In antiquity, vinification, that is fermentation, took place in pitheones, there would exist however spaces for auxiliary works, such as the cookshop for the condensation of the must and for the artymata, the deposits of utensiles and fruits, etc. Moreover, since vini- and viti-culture required devotion and permanent employment all year long, it was possible for a family house to be developed by the wine factory, as it appears to have happened in Kompoloi. Perhaps the installation was erected in the vineyard, if the north-south oriented ditches that were located SE of the house belong to an older vineyard. Aiming at the interpretation of the find, the excavation area was studied by the palaiobotanist Evi Margariti. If the tower area is excluded, the plant residues were, by thousands, exclusively pips.
